Kewanee tops Mendota girls twice

Mendota mounted a late rally but it wasn’t enough to overcome Kewanee in a 10-5 setback in Three Rivers Conference softball action on May 9 at Kewanee.

The Lady Boilers exploded for nine runs in the third inning and the score stayed that way until Mendota got on the board with three runs in the sixth. Kewanee added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, while the Lady Trojans tacked on two tallies in the seventh.

Mendota collected six hits, led by Katie Jenner with two doubles and a run batted in. Emma Schultz had a single and two RBI, Madelyn Becker drove in a run with a single and Reanna Brant provided a double.

Ava Eddy started in the circle for Mendota and was relieved by Ryleigh Sondgeroth in the third. Eddy gave up seven hits and nine runs (five earned) in taking the loss.

Kewanee made it two straight over Mendota, 14-1, in the conference finale on May 11 at the MHS field.

The visitors broke on top with five runs in the first inning and they added two more in the fourth for a 7-0 lead.

Mendota scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Becker.

Kewanee completed the scoring with one run in the sixth and six in the seventh.

The Lady Trojans managed five hits, with Schultz picking up a pair of doubles.

Sondgeroth pitched a complete game, allowing 15 hits. Only four of the 14 runs scored by Kewanee were earned as Mendota committed six errors.

The Lady Trojans concluded league play with a 3-9 record and are 5-15 overall.
