Joyce, Trojans claim Princeton Invite title

Mendota’s varsity golf team ran into a talented Rockford Christian squad and suffered a 145-164 setback on Sept. 13 at Rockford.

Zeke Hessenberger carded the low score for the Trojans with a 38. Ethan Hanaman was two shots back at 40, while Taylor Joyce, Colton Scheppers and Austin Robinson each shot a 43. Jack Beetz (51) completed the scoring.

A pair of Rockford Christian golfers shot 34 to share meet medalist honors.

The home team had a 187 to best Mendota’s junior varsity, which totaled 203.

Noah DeLong’s 42 was the low score among Trojan golfers. Also competing for Mendota were Luke Ross (49), Logan Brandner (52), Tristan Joyce (60), Mateo Escatel (60) and Lane Howard (64).


Mendota claimed the team championship of the Princeton Invitational on Sept. 15 at Wyaton Hills Golf Course.

Mendota fired a 343 to outperform Chillicothe IVC (345) and Princeton (347). There were 10 teams in the tournament.

The Trojans also had the individual champion as Taylor Joyce’s 77 was two shots better than second-place Hunter Mettille of Chillicothe IVC.

Hessenberger earned a top-10 medal for Mendota by finishing in nine place with an 84. Other Trojans helping lead the team to the title were Hanaman (89), Beetz (93), Scheppers (97) and Ross (103).


Mendota played on its home course for the first time in nearly a month and took down Oregon, 176-188, on Sept. 17.

Hanaman tied Oregon’s Jackson Buck for meet medalist with a 43. Taylor Joyce and Robinson were one shot back with 44s, followed by Hessenberger (45), Scheppers (52) and Ross (54).

Mendota’s junior varsity and freshman-sophomore squads battled each other and the JV prevailed, 205-228.

Participating for the JV team were Beetz (45), Brandner (51), Tristan Joyce (53), DeLong (56), Kevin Lewis (64) and Howard (65).

The freshman-sophomore lineup included Escatel (53), Aaron Reddin (56), Liam McGann (58), Shea Doughty (61), Gabe Arteaga (66) and Kody Becket (73).
