MENDOTA - Joyce Ann Adney, 85, of Mendota, passed away May 7, 2021 at Perry Memorial Hospital, Princeton.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 15 at the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota with Rev. Mary Bohall officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest with her husband. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, May 14 at the funeral home. Masks are required and social distancing encouraged.

Joyce was born Feb. 13, 1936 in Strawberry Point, Iowa to Roy and Inid (Rowell) Brown. She married Donald Dean Adney on Feb. 13, 1955 in California. He preceded her in death on April 29, 2006.

Survivors include her son Erik (Sue) Adney; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Janet; and eight nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

In 1954, Joyce took a room in a home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, belonging to Velora, the mother of her soon-to-be-husband, Donald Adney. She and Don met in December of 1954 when he came home on military leave. She married the love of her life on Feb. 13, 1955 and began her life as a military wife. She spoke frequently of their adventures in Hawaii, her favorite of all their base homes, primarily because it was then that they were blessed with their pride and joy. Their son, Erik was her greatest accomplishment and god’s greatest gift, she would say. After 11-plus years in the Marines, Don finally settled his family in Mendota, where they spent most of their lives. Joyce always had a welcoming smile and stories to share with all those who would pop in for a visit. She would share her love of plants, family and her many years working at Conco. And Joyce was fortunate to have three wonderful friends and caregivers later in life.

Memorials may be directed to Mendota VFW Post 4079 or the American Legion.
