OGLESBY - Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra Board President Andrea Kowalski has announced the upcoming concerts for the season.
After the retirement of beloved conductor Lucia Matos in May, a search committee was formed to find next season’s maestro. This season, IVSO will be joined by five highly-skilled conductors - a different one for each concert. Information about each of the conductors will be published prior to each concert and also posted on the ivso.org website.
The concerts and guest conductors for IVSO’s 2018-19 season will include:
At the Movies Family Pops Concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Illinois Valley Community College’s Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre. Conductor Danko Drusko and mezzo-soprano Ameena Khawaja will be featured for an evening of Disney magic and movies. Based in Los Angeles, Khawaja has collaborated with famous names such as Paul Anka, Sia, Mary J. Blige, Mandy Moore, Spacehog, Marc Anthony, Linda Perry, Switchfoot, Delta Goodrem, Rain Phoenix, Marco Antonio Solis, and Paul O'Neill's Trans-Siberian Orchestra. She performed live at the Grammy Awards, on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, The Voice, American Idol and The Jimmy Kimmel Show. She studied and performed musical theatre in San Francisco, improv comedy in Los Angeles, and opera throughout the United States and Europe. She is a teaching artist for the L.A. Philharmonic and cello instructor for Youth Orchestra Los Angeles at EXPO, whom she coached for their recent performance with Coldplay at the Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show.
Armistice at 100 is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4 at La Salle-Peru High School’s Matthiessen Auditorium with Chris Wild, conductor. “Plea for Peace” by Thomas, Ives Symphony No. 2, plus works by Faure and Elgar will be performed with soprano soloist Jerilynn Roether.
Winter Daydreams on Sunday, Dec. 9 will include a holiday singalong. The concert will begin at 3 p.m. at the Ottawa High School Auditorium with Glenn Block, conductor. Selections include Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 1, plus music by Leroy Anderson and Alfred Reed.
Young Performers will take the stage at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 10 at LaSalle-Peru High School’s Matthiessen Auditorium with Emanuele Andrizzi, conductor. Winners of the IVSO 2019 Young Performer’s Competition will be featured.
The Spring Concert will be conducted by Daniel Sommerville at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 at IVCC’s Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre.
