IVCIL to again offer phone amplifiers for individuals with hearing loss

LA SALLE – Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living, 18 Gunia Drive, LaSalle, is the local testing center for ITAC (Illinois Telecommunications Access Corp.). ITAC is a nonprofit corporation, funded by donations and a small portion of everyone’s Telecommunications Tax on their monthly phone bill.

ITAC provides amplified phone systems for cell phones and land lines across Illinois. These phone systems are free to qualifying individuals. They also carry a variety of equipment focused on the safety and communication needs of individuals with hearing loss or deafness.

As a local testing center, IVCIL can help you complete the application, verification paperwork and provide you with an opportunity to test the phones before you make a choice. There are several models to choose from. IVCIL serves LaSalle, Bureau, Putnam, Marshall and Stark counties. If you are not in IVCIL’s service area but are still interested in the Amplified Phone Program, you may call the IVCIL office for the closest testing center to you.

Among the many services that we have all gone without since the beginning of the COVID safety period in Illinois is the ITAC phone program. In order to work toward a safer and healthier Illinois, IVCIL and ITAC have been on much different customer service protocols. ITAC was closed for a period of time. With the next phase of Re-open Illinois upon us, IVCIL and ITAC are preparing to make phone testing and ordering available again. If you called during the COVID safety period, you will receive a call soon to schedule an ITAC testing and support appointment.

For the time being, IVCIL asks that you make an appointment for ITAC testing and support so that the number of people in the building can be limited and suggested sanitation procedures between customers testing phones can be followed. If you are unable to leave your home, now or any other time, IVCIL plans to meet your communication needs while protecting everyone as much as possible from COVID exposure.

You are asked to bring a copy of your most recent phone bill and your driver’s license or State ID when you come for your appointment.
