PERU - Horizon House of Illinois Valley, Inc. will now be able to provide Voucher Respite Services in LaSalle, Bureau, Marshall and Putnam counties for families caring for individuals with an intellectual/developmental disability (I/DD). The program will be funded through a $173,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services – Division of Developmental Disability (DHS-DDD).
The Voucher Respite program provides funding for planned or emergency care to an individual with an I/DD in order to provide temporary relief to families or other persons who are the primary caregiver of that individual.
Dan Fitzgerald, CEO of Horizon House, commented, “We competed with many other agencies in the state for this grant. Only five grants were awarded throughout the state and Horizon House was one of the five chosen. We have a great respite program with proven success and we are happy to be able to expand those services to a larger audience.”
Respite provides families with a break from caregiving responsibilities and the stress associated with providing ongoing continuous support for a person with I/DD. It helps keep families together and prevents unnecessary institutionalization of individuals. The ultimate goal is to enable people with I/DD to live in their home and to experience the most normalized lifestyle possible.
Horizon House has been a trusted provider of respite services in LaSalle County for over 35 years. This grant will enable Horizon House to make their respite services available in an expanded multi-county area and will be available in some smaller communities on the fringes of Lee, Stark and Grundy counties where it makes geographic sense to serve families in those locations.
Respite services are free if eligibility requirements are met. The level of service will be based on each family’s unique needs. Horizon House’s Respite Coordinator, Brenda Justi will help interested people determine how many hours of respite they qualify for.
