Angel of HopeFest & Hike for a Cure planned for Oct. 14

UTICA - When the 5th Annual Angel of HopeFest descends on Mill Street in downtown Utica on Sunday, Oct. 14, proceeds from the raffles, 50/50 and sponsorships will go toward a very big goal called March to a Million. With the 10th anniversary of the Upper Illinois Valley Relay for Life less than a year away, organizers hope to reach a total of $1 million raised by the local Relay to mark that milestone next July.

“Over the last decade, we’ve raised almost $900,000 for cancer research and to help our local cancer patients. We want to hit the million-dollar mark this year,” Relay team captain Nancy Jackson said. “The Illinois Valley has the most generous people you’ll ever meet. Angel of HopeFest is one great step in our March to a Million, and we’ll need the Illinois Valley to help us get there.”

The free street festival is set for noon-5 p.m. on Oct. 14. Local favorites Burn N’ Bush, Big Uproar, and The Lizzi Neal Band will provide live music on two stages. Other activities will include artisan vendors, raffles, a 50/50 and local food and drink specials.

Jackson’s Relay team, Angels Among Us, is joined by the Utica Business Association and August Hill Winery in creating the event, which has grown every year. In case of inclement weather, the festivities will be held inside the Canal Market building, just one block south of the I&M Canal downtown. Please see www.1mil.org for more information on March to a Million.

Hike for a Cure

Before the music starts, hikers can head up Starved Rock during this year’s “Hike for a Cure” event. Hikers will gather at the Back Door Lounge at Starved Rock Lodge. Four different guided tours will be available (9 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.) or participants can hike to the top of Starved Rock on their own in support of a cure for breast cancer.

A $20 donation will include a T-shirt, light breakfast, and a HOPE stone to carry on the hike. To register for a hike, sign up at www.starvedrocklodge.com or call (815) 220-7386.

Last year, Starved Rock Lodge presented a check to Relay for Life in the amount of $3,000 from their cancer fundraising efforts. Funds from this year’s efforts will go to the Illinois Valley Pink Ribbon Club and Relay for Life.
