MENDOTA - Helen L. Shimek, 93, of Mendota passed away Aug. 2, 2019 at the Mendota Lutheran Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7 at Holy Cross Church with Father Peter Pilon officiating. Burial will be at Assumption Chapel and Mausoleum, Winfield. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m.
Helen was born Oct. 1, 1925 in Haugen, Wis. to Joseph and Mary (Shamla) Kokesh. She married Joseph Shimek June 27, 1945 in Haugen. He preceded her in death in 2012.
Survivors include two daughters, Ann Harris of Dearborn, Mo. and Jan Kahl of Mendota; one sister, Dorothy of Barron, Wis.; a daughter-in-law, Linda Shimek of Greenwood, Ind.; two granddaughters, Jennifer Marsh and Stacy Harmon; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Joseph; two sons-in-law, Mark Harris and Robert Kahl; five brothers and one sister.
Helen farmed in Wisconsin before and following her marriage until 1947 when the couple moved to Lisle to work on farms owned and operated by the Benedictine Sisters of the Sacred Heart Monastery. She worked many years in the kitchen at Sacred Heart specializing in pastries and desserts. She retired in 1993.
