Harriers compete in Princeton

PRINCETON – Mendota participated in this year’s running of the Gary Coates Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 14 at Zearing Park in Princeton.

Freshman-sophomore runners were featured in the first race of the day, won by Mason Stoeger of Fieldcrest. He covered the 1.94-mile course in a time of 11:12, and was followed by Ken Boeson of Sterling Newman (11:17) and Matt Clark of Morris (11:22).

Mendota was represented by Nevin Fouke (13:26, 38th) and Liam Indigo (14:18, 45th).

Sterling Newman’s team took top honors in the race.

The girls’ varsity race of 3 miles was won by LaSalle-Peru’s Ashley Heagy in a time of 18:57. Mackenzie Rader of Knoxville (20:43) and Margaret Vaessen of Amboy-LaMoille (20:55) were second and third, respectively.

Mendota’s only finish belonged to Jamie Dooley who placed 39th in a time of 24:16.

Princeton’s team edged L-P, 60 to 61, to take top honors, while Orion’s girls were third with 89 points.

The varsity boys’ race was won by Riley Coulter of Mercer County in a time of 16:21. Next through the chute were Tonly Pethtel of Morris (16:23) and Logan Johnson of L-P (16:26).

Mendota’s top time belonged to Andrew Stamberger (19:38, 52nd), joined by Trent Stamberger (19:48, 56th), Ty Connelly (19:57, 60th), Sam Lawrence (20:51, 76th), Alex Hermosillo (22:01, 87th) and Hunter Siebert (26:02, 99th).

The Fieldcrest Knights earned top honors with a team score of 52, while L-P was second with 93 and Morris was third with 109 points. Mendota placed 13th with 301 points.
