Golfers have mixed results to start season

The Mendota Trojan varsity golfers had a rough start to the season as they came in last in a triangular meet at Putnam County on Aug. 14. The host Panthers tore up the course to the tune of a 148 score to easily outdistance second-place Princeton (171) and the Trojans (185).

Mendota was led in scoring by sophomore Taylor Joyce with a 43, while classmate Colton Scheppers was next with a 44. Freshman Zeke Hessenberger carded a 48, followed by Sam Becker (50), Owen Wixom (51) and Eli Otterbach (52).

Caleb Dzierzynski of Putnam County was a meet medalist with a 5 under par 31.

Princeton won the junior varsity meet over Mendota, 207-216.

Tristan Joyce and Jack Beetz each had 48s for the Trojans, while Austin Robinson (55) and Luke Ross (65) also competed.

The Trojans hosted Rock Falls in their home opener on Aug. 15 at Mendota Golf Club and the Rockets prevailed, 163-174.

Taylor Joyce and Hessenberger tied for Mendota’s low round with 43s. Wixom and Becker were right of their heels each with a 44, while Otterbach shot a 54 and Scheppers totaled 55.

Rock Falls duo Grant Wasson and Braydon Schultz tied for meet medalist honors with 39s.

The Rockets’ JV team shot a 200 to beat the Trojans by five strokes.

Mason Schuhler was the lone Mendota player to break the 50 mark with a round of 48. Next on the docket for the Trojans was Lane Howard with a 51, followed by Tristan Joyce (52), Robinson (54), Tony Aughenbaugh (54) and John Buchanan (56).

Mendota’s freshman-sophomore squad turned in a 236 to defeat Rock Falls by four shots.

Beetz led the way with a 52, while Mateo Escatel turned in a 59. Also competing for the Trojans were Ross (61), Shea Doughty (64), Noah DeLong (65), Kody Beckett (72) and Blake Thompson (76).

MHS’s varsity squad posted its first win of the season with a 184 score to outperform host Oregon (209) on Aug. 17.

Hessenberger led the way for the Trojans by shooting a 38 to gain meet medalist honors. Scheppers was second on the card with a 47, while Taylor Joyce turned in a 48. Rounding out the Trojan lineup were Otterbach (51), Becker (54) and Wixom (55).

No team scores were kept in the junior varsity meet as each team had just two golfers. Thompson (66) and Beckett (77) played for the Trojans.

Oregon does not have a freshman-sophomore, so Mendota’s 12 players were divided into three teams and duked it out. Team Gold came out victorious with a 231, followed by Team White (249) and Team Purple (251).

Members of Gold were Aughenbaugh (54), Buchanan (54), Robinson (61) and Escatel (62).

Making up White were Schuhler (48), Howard (61), DeLong (63) and Doughty (77).

Playing for Purple were Beetz (53), Tristan Joyce (56), Ross (64) and Aaron Reddin (78).

The Trojans finished second by one stroke in a triangular meet at Spring Valley on Aug. 21. Seneca had the low score with a 176, followed by Mendota at 177 and Hall at 206.

Hessenberger had the low score for Mendota with a 41, one shot off the meet medalist. Next in for the Trojans were Taylor Joyce and Schuhler, each with 44s, followed by Tristan Joyce (48), Wixom (52) and Aughenbaugh (54).

Mendota and Seneca battled in junior varsity action and the Trojans prevailed, 190-221.

Taking the course for the Trojans were Robinson (45), Scheppers (48), Howard (48), Becker (49), Otterbach (49) and Beetz (50).
