Free half-day retreat planned for dementia caregivers

OTTAWA – The Alzheimer’s Association, Central Illinois Chapter will hold a dementia caregiver half-day retreat on Saturday, May 20 in Ottawa. Rethink..Refresh..Recharge will take place from 8:30–11:30 a.m. at the OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center, 1100 E. Norris Drive, Ottawa.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association 2017 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures Report, 588,000 people in Illinois are providing unpaid care for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia. Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia is exceptionally demanding and requires more assistance compared to caregivers of other older adults.

“The long duration of the disease takes a devastating toll on caregivers emotionally, physically and financially,” says Daryl Carlson, manager, Education & Outreach for the Alzheimer’s Association, Central Illinois Chapter.

The report states that 35 percent of caregivers for people with Alzheimer’s or another dementia report that their health has gotten worse due to care responsibilities compared to 19 percent of caregivers of people without dementia. As symptoms worsen and the amount of care needed continues to increase, caregivers report stress, anxiety and even depression at high rates.

“These findings are why it’s important for us to ensure that caregivers have the resources and support needed to not only care for their loved one, but care for themselves.”

Attendees of this caregiver retreat will:

Rethink caregiving skills to help them work smarter and improve communication

Refresh themselves while learning to manage competing responsibilities

Recharge with practical massage techniques for caregivers and their loved ones with Amy Ferko, LMT, CLT.

The event is free and open to all family or caregivers of someone with memory loss. A light continental breakfast will be provided and those who register by May 17 will receive a free copy of “Alzheimer’s, Dementia & Memory Loss: Straight Talk for Families & Caregivers” by Monica Vest Wheeler.
