MENDOTA – The Mendota Lady Trojans started the new year off on a winning note with a 40-39 thriller over Sterling Newman in Three Rivers Conference action on Jan. 3 at the MHS gym.
Mendota trailed throughout much of the game, falling behind 9-4 after the first period and 21-19 at the half. Newman owned what seemed to be a comfortable 36-27 advantage heading to the fourth quarter, but the Lady Trojans came alive and outscored Newman, 13-3, in the final frame to pull out the victory.
With 1:30 left to play, Mendota got a steal and a basket from Katie Jenner and then another steal and a three-pointer from Natalie Bodmer to tie the game. Mendota swiped the ball away yet again and Jenner nailed a long two-pointer to put the Lady Trojans on top, 40-38.
“We played hard on both ends all night long,” noted Mendota coach John Hansen. “I’m unexplainably proud of our fight and clutch play late in the game.”
Reanna Brant led the charge with 18 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots. Jenner ended with nine points, eight steals and three assists, while Paige Manning collected six rebounds.
Mendota’s records stand at 2-12 overall and 1-3 in the league.
