COMPTON — Fountain Neal, 95, of Compton, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2018, in the Mendota Lutheran Home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3 in the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota, with chaplain Kent Terry officiating. Burial will be at the Melugins Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services in the funeral home.
Fountain was born Aug. 29, 1922 in West Frankfort to Fountain and Alma (Stebbens) Neal. He married Esta (London) Neal in June 1942 and they had four sons.
He lived in Compton, where he raised his family. He worked in the feed and fertilizer business and owned and managed Compton Ag Service for many years. He also worked with the Cub Scouts and was on the Compton Village Board.
He married Gerry Kromm on June 28, 1987. Gerry and Fountain happily resided in the Compton/Mendota area. Fountain proudly served in the Army in WWII in the South Pacific, where he was an amphibious tank driver and was involved in a number of island assault landings. He was also called back into the service during the Korean War. He was definitely a part of the greatest generation and will be missed.
Fountain is survived by four sons, Terry (Kris) Neal and David (Liz) Neal, both of Compton, Dennis (Carolyn) Neal of Rochelle, and Michael (Bettie) Neal of Madison, Wis.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and four stepsons, Stephen (Pam) Kromm, Robert (Luann) Kromm, and Timothy Kromm, all of West Brooklyn, and David (Laurie) Kromm of Mineral Point, Wis.
He was preceded in death by Esta (London) Neal, Eunice (Charn) Neal and Gerry (Kromm) Neal, in addition to his parents and one brother and sister.
Memorials may be directed to the Mendota VFW Post 4079 and American Legion in Mendota and Compton.
