Former Mendotans start art club at retirement community in Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Richard and Karen Sisler, formerly of Mendota, have been active at the Hawaii Kai Retirement Community in Honolulu, where they now live. Together with two other residents, the Sislers formed the Rainbow Art Club.

Karen said the idea was “hatched” in the fall of 2015 as a way to offer art classes to residents and area neighbors in East Oahu. The club has since offered 11 classes of eight two-hour weekly sessions in watercolor and drawing instruction that served 60 people.

In 2016, the group held a fundraiser and opened a small art gallery within the retirement community, which has had over 10 exhibits and special one-day shows. They now have a website, rainbowartclub.org, and plan to obtain tax exempt status in the near future.

Karen serves as the club’s president and Richard is a member-at-large and serves on the financial/budget committee. He also had an exhibit of his watercolor paintings in a show with artist Mary LeMon, who is a resident and friend. Meanwhile, Karen exhibited in the student shows.

Plans for this fall include a new class that will incorporate the use of technology for drawing and painting and the number of sessions will increase from eight to 10.
