PRINCETON - Festival 56 will present Seussical the Musical, a production intended for all children under the age of 100. The third production in the 2017 season, the Dr. Seuss-for-all-ages show will run July 7–15 at the Grace Performing Arts Center in Princeton.
The Seussical ensemble features the Festival 56 summer company along with children from Camp 56, the Festival’s theater camp for young people ages 8–18.
Seussical, a combination of the most popular Seuss books, takes place in the magical Jungle of Nool and is narrated by The Cat in the Hat. Cat in the Hat fans will enjoy the Cat’s antics, especially when he steps through what theater folks call the “fourth wall” and interacts with the audience.
The main character is the familiar Horton the Elephant, who discovers Whoville and its residents, the Whos, inside a speck of dust. Horton also discovers and bonds with the Who boy Jojo, who is in trouble for thinking “thinks.”
The plot thickens as Horton tries to protect Whoville and an egg abandoned by the irresponsible Mayzie LaBird. As a result of his good intentions, Horton is ridiculed by the Sour Kangaroo and put on trial for insanity. Horton’s friend Gertrude McFuzz stands by him, however, in spite of her own self-image problem - she has only one feather in her tail.
Of course, the story has a happy ending. Love, loyalty and unity prevail over discord.
One of the most widely performed shows in America, Seussical was created by Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. The Festival 56 production is sponsored by Langhenry, Gillen, Lundquist & Johnson, LLC, and WZOE/Z98/WRVY. Season sponsors are Heartland Bank and Trust, Princeton Tourism and Visitors Bureau, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Grace Performing Arts Center is located at 316 South Main St., Princeton and is completely accessible with ample parking nearby.
