MENDOTA - Hundreds of fans enjoyed cheering and watching while dozens of generous donors competed in a half-court basketball shot “Cancer Challenge” held Dec. 11 during the LaSalle LYNX vs. Mendota Spartans boys’ basketball game. Winning the half-court challenge was Dominik Stamberger of Mendota Northbrook Middle School.

Taking what was described by students as an “epic shot,” LaSalle Lincoln Principal Jon Fox won the special Principals’ Challenge. Fox’s shot can be seen in a viral video on the March To A Million Facebook page.

Northbrook players and cheerleaders won a pizza party for a later date, donated by Peru Pizzas By Marchelloni owner Eric Gleim. With appreciation by their Mendota peers, Relay For Life, and a matching donation by the Mendota restaurant, LaSalle LYNX players and cheerleaders were treated to Marchelloni’s after the game.

Relay for Life volunteer and Northbrook boys’ 8th-grade head coach Courtney Nave, upon being presented the winning school’s Marchelloni pizza party certificate, said, “In multiple ways this fun, combined event demonstrated to the students how authentically we care and how the Illinois Valley comes together as a powerful and comforting force for good when needed.”

Both the Peru and Mendota restaurants will again fight cancer in a “Marchelloni To A Million” day, Tuesday, Jan. 29. The usual menu and prices will be in place for customers, however, a percentage of all sales/orders that day will be donated to the cause. Area residents are encouraged to mark the date now and plan to dine in, take-out or order delivery on Jan. 29 from either Pizzas By Marchelloni on Meriden Street in Mendota (815) 538-2145 or Pizzas By Marchelloni Peru on Shooting Park Road (815) 220-1564.

Proceeds from the half-court shot event were divided with a portion going to each school and to the winner and several hundred dollars going toward the historic “March To A Million” local cancer campaign.
