PAW PAW - Franklin Swan of Paw Paw will celebrate his 90th birthday on March 12.

Franklin was born in Kankakee and attended Stuben Elementary School, Kankakee High School and Moody Bible Institute (‘57) majoring in radio technology.

From 1951-1953 during the Korean War, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, helping secure freedom for millions of South Koreans. Though he had a young wife and baby daughter, his National Guard unit was activated. Franklin received the United Nations Service medal for Korea, the first international medal created by the U.N. recognizing multi-national defense forces. In the military, he received electronics training, becoming an expert in radio technology, which upon return he taught to hundreds of students at Moody Bible Institute during his 21 years as a faculty member. He also worked for 21 years as the transmitter engineer for Channel 38.

Franklin has resided in Paw Paw for 24 years and is actively involved with Paw Paw Bible Church, the Gideons and the American Legion. He is married to Lynn Swan and is the father of six children and stepfather to five. He has 32 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Birthday wishes may be sent to Franklin at P.O. Box 376, Paw Paw, IL 61353.
