ROCK FALLS – Mendota and Rock Falls tied at 14-14 in freshman-sophomore football action on April 12 at Rock Falls.
Rock Falls got on the board in the opening period on a 3-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion run to make it 8-0.
The Trojans took the lead in the second quarter with a pair of scores. JP Belmonte tallied on a 1-yard run with 1:48 left before halftime. The two-point run was no good.
Then with just 34 seconds left in the half, Mendota’s Ryne Strouss intercepted a Rock Falls pass and returned it 72 yards for a TD. Garret Zinke hauled in the two-point conversion pass from Justin Randolph to make it 14-8 at the break.
Both teams went scoreless in the third frame before Rock Falls scored the tying touchdown on a 30-yard run with 4:57 left on the clock. Mendota stopped the Rockets on their two-point run attempt and the game ended in a tie.
The Trojans totaled just 64 yards in the contest. Belmonte rushed 22 times for 51 yards, but Mendota also lost 27 yards rushing.
Randolph completed 6 of 13 passes for 35 yards. Strouss and Zinke each had three receptions.
Mendota’s defense limited Rock Falls to 68 total yards.
