Happ graduates from Carleton College

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Michael Happ of Mendota graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science/International Relations from Carleton College at its 143rd Commencement exercises on June 10. He is the son of Joseph and Karen Happ of Mendota.

Following remarks by Carleton College President Steven Poskanzer, two senior students addressed the graduating class: Reina Desrouleaux, a chemistry major from Silver Spring, Md. and Eli Ruffer, a chemistry major from Highland Park. Carleton also presented an honorary degree during the commencement ceremony to Kathy L. Hudson ‘82, former Deputy Director for Science, Outreach and Policy at the National Institutes of Health.

Founded in 1866, Carleton College is a national top 10, private liberal arts college in the historic river town of Northfield, Minn., 45 miles south of Minneapolis/Saint Paul. Best known for its academic excellence and warm, welcoming campus community, Carleton offers 37 majors and 15 concentrations in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.

Local student earns degree from St. Ambrose Univ.

DAVENPORT, Iowa - St. Ambrose University held its spring commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 13, at the iWireless Center in Moline. Among the graduates was Nicole Prusator of Mendota who earned a degree in English Teacher Education

During the ceremony, Kenneth Hackett, U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See from 2013 until January 2017, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Prior to his appointment as the chief U.S. emissary to the Vatican, Hackett devoted his career to humanitarian service and Catholic philanthropy throughout the world. He was president of Catholic Relief Services from 2003 through 2013, and was the organization’s executive director from 1993 through 2013. Hackett delivered the commencement address.

Univ. of Iowa graduates announced

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Evan Carroll of Mendota received a BBA-Management degree from the University of Iowa at the close of the spring 2017 semester.

Kishwaukee College announces spring dean’s list

MALTA - The office of student services at Kishwaukee College has announced the students named to the spring 2017 dean’s list. Local students include Gabrielle Cultra and Alyssa Ohme of Earlville and Jonathan Essex and William Zeman of Paw Paw.

To be eligible for dean’s list honors, a student must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours (at the 100/200 level) during an academic term at Kishwaukee College with a semester grade point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

University of Iowa spring dean’s list named

St. Mary’s College spring dean’s list

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Whitney Lewis of Mendota has been included on the Saint Mary’s College dean’s list for the spring semester.
To earn academic honors at Saint Mary’s, a student must achieve a grade point averageof at least 3.6 on a 4.0 scale, have at least 12 graded credit hours, no incompletes, and no grades lower than a C.



Saint Mary’s College is a four-year, Catholic, residential, women’s liberal arts college offering five Bachelor’s degrees and more than 30 major areas of study including business, nursing, art, chemistry and social work, and two graduate degrees, a Master of Science and a Doctorate.

UW-Platteville announces dean’s list



PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Hailey Myers of Mendota has been named to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville spring dean’s list. She is majoring in Industrial Technology Management.

The dean’s list honors full-time students who earn high honors in their respective colleges in the spring semester. The College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture and the College of Liberal Arts and Education require grade-point averages of 3.75 and above, while the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science requires students to reach at least a 3.50.

Local students on Augustana dean’s list

ROCK ISLAND - Emily Grace of Earlville and Samuel Dunklau of Paw Paw have been named to the Augustana College dean’s list for the spring term. To earn this academic honor, students must maintain a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale during the term.

Grace, a senior majoring in Social Welfare and Public Health, and Dunklau, a senior majoring in Multimedia Journalism and Mass Communication, both graduated in May.

Founded in 1860, Augustana College is a selective four-year residential college of the liberal arts and sciences that enrolls 2,500 students.

Henning awarded full scholarship from University of Oklahoma

EULESS, Texas - Adam C. Henning, grandson of Ruth Dunlap and the late Dan L. Dunlap of Mendota, recently graduated from Trinity High School in Euless, Texas. Mrs. Dunlap attended the graduation ceremony, which was held on May 27 at the Fort Worth, Texas Convention Center.

Henning, the son of Claus C. and Dawn (Dunlap) Henning, was selected as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, one of eight finalists in his graduating class of 770 seniors. About 15,000 seniors were named finalists from approximately 1.5 million juniors who took the PSAT/NMSGT tests. Henning is among approximately 8,000 finalists who are awarded scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Program or from sponsoring colleges. He accepted a full five-year scholarship to the University of Oklahoma, College of Engineering at Norman, Okla.

The University of Oklahoma consistently enrolls the highest number of National Merit Scholars at U.S. public universities, 850 from 40 states, the past academic year.

Henning was also accepted into the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band. During high school, he was first chair trombone and section leader in the school’s concert, jazz and marching bands. He also has been active in Boy Scouts, and recently earned and was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.
