NIU congratulates spring 2017 graduates



DE KALB - Northern Illinois University celebrated commencement weekend May 12 and 13. The following Mendota students were among more than 3,000 who graduated this spring.

Missouri S&T announces honor list



ROLLA, Mo. - Kevin Schulze of Mendota has been named to the Missouri University of Science and Technology honor list for the spring 2017 semester. Schulze is a junior majoring in petroleum engineering.

To be included on the honor list, students must have carried a minimum of 12 hours and had grade point averages of 3.2 or above out of a possible 4.0.

Founded in 1870 as the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Missouri S&T is a research university of more than 8,800 students and part of the four-campus University of Missouri System. Located in Rolla, Mo., Missouri S&T offers 98 degree programs in 39 areas of study and awards bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees in engineering, the sciences, business and information technology, the humanities, and the liberal arts.

UW-Madison names dean’s list



MADISON, Wis. - James Carroll of Mendota is included on the University of Wisconsin-Madison dean’s list for the 2017 spring semester. Carroll is attending the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at UW-Madison.

UW-Madison students who achieve at a high level academically are recognized by the dean at the close of each semester. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must complete a minimum of 12 graded degree credits in that semester. Each university school or college sets its own GPA requirements for students to be eligible to receive the distinction.

Local student graduates from Saint Mary’s Univ.

WINONA, Minn. - Alexander Miller of Mendota received Bachelor of Arts degree in May from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in Winona, Minn.
He is the son of Cindy Miller.

NIU announces spring dean’s list

DE KALB - Northern Illinois University has announced its spring dean’s list. Local students included on the list are:

Mendota - Yohan Arellano, History - B.A., Mendota High School; Mario Cortes Sandoval, Accountancy, Mendota High School; Malorie Defore, Rehabilitation Services, Mendota High School; JoAnn Kofoed, Studio Art, Mendota High School; Joshua Margowski, Accountancy, Saint Bede Academy; Remigio Nanez, Accountancy, Mendota High School; and Sean Vermilyea, Accountancy, Woodland High School.

Compton - Rebecca Scheid, English - B.A., Mendota High School.

To earn this distinction, students at NIU must meet a minimum semester grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology or a minimum of 3.75 on a 4.0 scale in the colleges of Business, Education, Health and Human Sciences, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Visual and Performing Arts.

Prentice earns degree from Knox College

GALESBURG - Mitch Prentice, the Mendota Reporter’s current beat writer for the Paw Paw News, is a 2017 graduate of Knox College in Galesburg. Prentice, who was also on the Knox College spring dean’s list, earned a Bachelor of Science in creative writing with a minor in journalism.
