Bradley commencement

PEORIA - Bradley University congratulated nearly 900 students who received their academic degrees in May. Among the graduates were local students, David Spayer of Mendota, who earned a degree in construction, and Brock Sutton of LaMoille, who earned a degree in civil engineering.

Bradley University is a top-ranked, private university in Peoria, offering 5,400 undergraduate and graduate students the resources of a larger university and the personal attention of a smaller university. More than 185 academic programs are offered in business, communications, education, engineering, fine arts, health sciences, liberal arts and sciences, and technology. 

Cornell dean’s list

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Erin Hosto of LaMoille was among 227 Cornell College students named to its dean’s list for the spring semester. Hosto was recognized for having a grade point average of 3.6000-3.7999.

Twice each year, at the end of January and the end of May, the Dean of the College recognizes students who have earned superior grades during the previous semester and enrolls them on the dean’s list based upon their semester grade point average.

Cornell College’s campus is located in Mount Vernon, Iowa. One of the “Colleges That Change Lives,” Cornell is a national liberal arts college with a distinctive One Course At A Time curriculum. Students take one class for 18 days, which provides them the chance to dive into their studies and focus more intensely on the classes of their choice. Local student receives teacher licensure at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa - Graduating Iowa State University students seeking teacher licensure were corded at a ceremony May 10, in C.Y. Stephen’s Auditorium. Among the graduates was Gabrielle Cultra of Earlville. As part of the celebration, each student received honors cords, placed around their shoulders by the influential mentor of their choice. Cultra, an Agricultural and Life Sciences Education major, is now prepared to teach agricultural education.

Iowa State’s cording ceremony celebrates the official entry of graduating students into the impactful and challenging teaching profession. Teacher education students at Iowa State learn the latest and most effective techniques for ensuring their future students and schools will become their best. They are prepared for the diverse and demanding school environments by professors who research and continually improve effective educational practices and technologies. 

Iowa State dean’s list

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State University student Mari Biers of Mendota has been recognized for outstanding academic achievement by being named to the spring semester dean’s list. Students named to the dean’s list must have earned a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours of graded course work.

Biers, a junior at Iowa State, is majoring in kinesiology and health. 

University of Iowa graduates

IOWA CITY, Iowa - More than 4,800 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students at the University of Iowa recently participated in graduation ceremonies. Local graduates include Phyllis Brower and Cody Zinke, both of Mendota.

Brower earned a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and a certificate in Museum Studies. Zinke earned a Bachelor of Arts in Health and Human Physiology.

The UI’s spring graduates had an average cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.16 on a 4.0 scale. In addition, 16 percent of the graduating class graduated with multiple majors and 355 undergraduates graduated with honors. 

University of Iowa dean’s list

IOWA CITY, Iowa - University of Iowa student Lukas Brandner of Mendota, who is studying in the College of Engineering, was named to the UI dean’s list for the spring semester.

Undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the Tippie College of Business who achieve a grade point average of 3.50 or higher on 12 semester hours or more of UI graded course work during a semester or summer session and who have no semester hours of I (incomplete) or O (no grade reported) during the same semester are recognized by inclusion on the dean’s list for that semester.

More than 5,700 UI students were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2019 semester. 

Kishwaukee College graduates

MALTA - Kishwaukee College has announced their spring graduates. Commencement ceremonies were held on May 18. Members of the Class of 2019 participated in one of two ceremonies on campus, dependent upon the program completed. The graduate total for the semester is 384 students who completed a total of 426 degrees and certificates for spring 2019.

Local graduates include Nina Ramos, CERT, Esthetics, With Distinction, and Nathan Paul Truckenbrod, AAS, Diesel Power Technology, both of Mendota; Antonio Solis, AAS, Diesel Power Technology, CERT, Diesel Power/Equipment Repair, With Distinction, of Paw Paw; and Joyce A Papiech, AAS, Horticulture Greenhouse, Summa Cum Laude, of Sublette.

Graduation honors are divided into three categories based on final cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale: summa cum laude indicates a cumulative GPA between 3.75-4.0; magna cum laude indicates a cumulative GPA between 3.5-3.749; and cum laude indicates a cumulative GPA between 3.25-3.499. Students who fulfill requirements for a Certificate and have a final cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher are awarded a Certificate with Distinction. 

Wartburg College dean’s list

WAVERLY, Iowa - Kimberly Schlesinger of Compton was named to the Wartburg College Winter/May Term dean’s list. She is among 443 students recognized for the Winter/May Term.

The list honors students who earned a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or above in at least five course credits during the terms. Four of the five course credits have to be graded with a traditional letter grade.

Wartburg students take four courses during Winter Term, which runs from January through April, and one course during the one-month May Term. May Term courses often involve travel and study abroad.

Wartburg, a four-year liberal arts college recognized for community engagement, enrolls 1,498 students and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
