Hosto volunteers during Cornell’s Alternative Spring Break

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Erin Hosto of LaMoille was among the students who spent an intensive week participating in Cornell College’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program. Students went on service trips to Virginia, South Dakota, Massachusetts, Colorado and Iowa, volunteering at a variety of organizations.

They began meeting early in the school year to prepare for their experience and learn more about the social issues related to their trips, such as conservation or poverty. After groups return, they give a presentation on the Orange Carpet to share their experiences and educate their peers about issues around the country.

“I think every year I have gone on a trip it has been an incredibly eye-opening and humbling experience,” said Cornell College student Chloe Rossier. “I have been able to meet and talk to people going through such different personal experiences, had my own stereotypes challenged, gained confidence in working with professional non-profits, and stepped out of my comfort zone. As much as I learned about myself, I learned even more about serious issues such as homelessness, poverty, and domestic violence. There is a lot of work to be done in the world, and ASB is the perfect place to help.”
