MENDOTA - Dwight G. Heckert, 78, of Mendota passed away July 21, 2019 at Aperion Care, Spring Valley.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 25 at First Presbyterian Church, Mendota with Rev. Susan Presley officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the church. Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota is assisting the family.

Dwight was born Oct. 12, 1940 in rural Venedy to George and Esther (Runge) Heckert, the youngest of six siblings. He married Tess Stratton on Sept. 4, 1960 after meeting her while attending the University of Illinois.

Survivors include his wife of Mendota; two daughters, Amy (Dave) Brewer of Mendota and Laura (Brian) Schmidt of Littleton; three grandsons, Alex, Drew and Dillon; one brother, Bob (Valeria) Heckert; a sister-in-law, Juanita Heckert; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Dwight attended Okawville schools and then graduated from the University of Illinois in 1962. He went on to also earn a Master’s degree in Education. He worked in farm management and banking for 37 years, retiring in 2000. Following retirement, he served as the city treasurer and did volunteer work in many forms. He played clarinet in the 2nd regimental band at U of I and sang in the Bloomington Barbershop Chorus and the Presbyterian Church choir. He loved history and nature, spending hours on research projects and the herbarium for Nachusa Grasslands and Amboy Marsh Nature Preserve. Most of all, he will be remembered for his love of family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund or First Presbyterian Church.
