MENDOTA – An update on the installation of cameras and the resignation of a city employee were among the items handled by the Mendota City Council at its regular meeting on Jan. 15.

Alderman Bill Hunt said the installation of cameras in the downtown area began on Jan. 15 and should be completed by the end of the week, weather permitting.

In action from alderman Kyle Kim’s report, the council accepted the resignation of Joanie Nichols, Mendota Civic Center executive director, effective on Jan. 31. Kim said she has done an excellent job during her five years as the executive director and the city wishes her the best in her future endeavors.

Kim then made a motion to appoint Rachel Green, pictured above, as the new executive director, which was approved by the council, effective Feb. 1. Green has been the Civic Center’s assistant manager.

Alderman John Holland reported that the budget meetings for the new fiscal year will begin on Feb. 1.

Alderman Jim Fitzpatrick presented two requests for the council’s consideration, both of which were approved. The first request was from the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce to hold its annual Fireworks Celebration on Saturday, June 30 at Lake Mendota. This is a change from the usual date of July 4.

The other request was from OSF HealthCare to hold its annual Cornapalooza 5K/10K run/walk on Saturday, Aug. 11. The event requires the use of city property at the Lake Mendota west shelter, the Civic Center parking lot and the Lake Kakusha trail.

Mayor David Boelk presented a permit request from the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce to hold its annual Tag Day on Saturday, June 23. The council approved the request.

The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be held on Monday, Feb. 5 at 6:30 p.m.
