Discovery Center offers Family Fun Days

Posted

ROCKFORD – Discovery Center Museum will host several Family Fun Day events between now and the end of the year. Designed as educational and entertaining programs for families, Family Fun Days focus on a specific subject matter and then explore that subject through various means, including activities, demonstrations, make-and-take projects, and performances.

Schedule of events:

Spooky Science will be held on Friday, Oct. 25; from 6-9 p.m.

Show off your Halloween costume during this not-so-scary night of Halloween high-jinks at Discovery Center Museum. Explore the museum and follow the map to find goodies galore from one exhibit to the next! Concoct gooey, glowing, globs of slime, make monstrous crafts, and meet some scientific heroes from beyond the grave. Engage in astonishing science activities that look like mystifying magic, pick up a Nobel Prize, tromp through the park in the dark, and more. Cost is $5 members; $10 public.

Smashing Pumpkins will be held on Sunday, Nov. 3 from 1-4 p.m.

Snatch that pumpkin off the porch and bring it to Discovery Center. Turn your spent squash into a parking lot projectile, or use it for target practice. Join the fun of watching Jack-o-lanterns fly, create your very own catapult, and celebrate with autumn activities and shattering experiments. Event is included with Discovery Center admission: $9/person; free to members and all children ages one and younger.

Toy Trains! will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10 and Monday, Nov. 11 from 11 a.m.to 2 p.m.

Chug on over to where your imagination rides the rails with amazing model trains, courtesy of the Rock River Valley Division of the National Model Train Association. Assemble and decorate wooden train cars that fit your magnetic train set at home. Then it’s full steam ahead with special crafts, train activities and play for the whole family. Event is included with Discovery Center admission: $9/person; free to members and all children ages one and younger.

Grinchy Green Science will be held on Friday, Nov. 29 and Saturday, Nov. 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It’s time to drape the red and green—heavy on the green. Dive into the holiday spirit with art and science activities during two days of festivities featuring green fizz, Grinch gunk, and tons of decorative tape. Squirt and swirl colors, design a Whoville hat, make a marble-ous game, and more. Event is included with Discovery Center admission: $9/person; free to members and all children ages one and younger.

Holiday Hoopla will be held on Thursday – Monday, Dec. 26–30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Discovery Center has a rainbow of fun in their drop-in workshop space. Pick up a hammer or grab a screwdriver and get your imagination in gear. See what you can construct using recycled materials, and take what you make from bird feeders and toys to musical instruments. Then have a blast building with LEGOs, cardboard, wire, and foam. Event is included with Discovery Center admission: $9/person; free to members and all children ages one and younger.

Countdown to Fun! will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 31 from 12–4 p.m.

Three...Two... FUN!” It’s midnight – somewhere, and Discovery Center is counting down every hour! Fabricate a party hat, knock together a noisemaker, and prepare to be showered with confetti. It may be cold outside, but it’ll be STEAM-y at Discovery Center Museum where the New Year rings in with science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Event is included with Discovery Center admission: $9/person; free to members and all children ages one and younger.
