AJIJIC, JALISCO, Mexico – Diane Schmidt, 77, of Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico passed away Jan. 20 at Atria Park Assisted Living, Glen Ellyn.
A memorial service will be held at a later date for family and friends.
Born in the parish community of Peterstown in Mendota on Dec. 23, 1945, she was the third of the late George and Dorothy (Funfsinn) Schmidt's seven loving children.
She is survived by her brothers, Joe Schmidt (Terri), Mark Schmidt (Teresa), and Ray Schmidt (Shelly); beloved aunt of Tim Engels, Lori Grinka (Randy), Brian Schmidt (Laura), Robert Schmidt (Luz), Tricia Hernandez (Mike), Wes Schmidt, Travis Schmidt (Denise), Chris Schmidt (Kayla), Katie Schmidt, Stephanie Schmidt, Alicia Harker (Jefferey), and Matthew Gass; and her two most gracious friends, Judy Fulmer and Anita Balodis, who were always there during her final two years battling duodenal cancer.
Diane was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Carol (Donald Engels deceased), sister Linda, and brother Richard (Diane deceased).
Diane will be remembered for living life to her fullest. At age 14 she left for the Sisters of Saint Francis of Assisi in Milwaukee graduating from Saint Mary's High School, and Cardinal Stritch College. After serving community and ministry in Delavan, Wis., and Longmont, Colo., she came back to the Chicago area receiving her Master's of Social Work from the University of Illinois in Chicago. She spent the next several years managing at Oak Park Family Service, American Heart Association, and then director at the Worksite Wellness Council of Illinois. In 1997, she became a National Marketing Director at Juice Plus working with individuals and small- to mid-sized businesses developing a wellness program to enhance their health.
She retired in 2016, moving to Ajijic, Mexico and living the Lake Chapala life.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either National Parks Conservation Association of Washington D.C., or Child Fund International of Richmond, Va.
