MENDOTA – When practically everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Mendota in the first quarter of its game with Winnebago, it was almost a certainty that the Trojans were staring at their third straight loss to begin the season.
Two lost fumbles by the Trojans and a surprise successful onside kick by Winnebago allowed the Indians to zoom out to a 21-0 lead. But there was no quit in the Trojans as they scratched and clawed their way back to take the lead in the fourth quarter before finally succumbing to Winnebago, 51-42, in a Big Northern Conference shootout on Sept. 8 at the MHS field.
