DAAHA receives Community Foundation Grant

Posted

DEKALB – DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association (DAAHA) is the recipient of a $2,000 Community Needs Grant from the DeKalb County Community Foundation. Grant support enables DAAHA to create a historical marker virtual tour, consisting of 2-3 minute mini documentaries for each of the 28 historical markers in DeKalb County. The virtual tour will provide historical images and information about the event recognized by a historical marker.

Historical images, provided by the Joiner History Room and the Regional History Center, will be used by OC Creative to produce the mini documentaries that make up the virtual tour. Source material and links for users to gain more knowledge about DeKalb County and its history will also be available. The DeKalb County Virtual Tour will be available in the fall of 2018.

The virtual tour compliments a printed booklet, for those who want to visit the markers in person. The printed booklet featuring all of the county historical markers, made possible through a grant from the Douglas C. and Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation, includes three self-guided driving tours. Each historical marker recognizes the rich history of people, places, and innovation throughout the county. The booklet gives more insight, information, and historical photographs than the markers themselves.

Seeing the markers in person gives its own perspective and excitement in knowing more about the significance of that location. The main goal for the project is to increase accessibility to DeKalb County’s local history using the historical markers. Another goal is to increase awareness of the markers and the significant event each marker is honoring. The booklet component will be printed and distributed to county historical societies in the summer of 2018.
