MENDOTA – Firefighters responded to a fire in a commercial building with a second-floor apartment at 710 Illinois Ave. at 12:22 p.m. Nov. 29.
A small amount of smoke was visible coming from the roofline of the building when firefighters arrived. Because the building is attached to others for an entire block in downtown Mendota, mutual aid was called in from Mendota-Troy Grove, Earlville, LaSalle, Peru and Utica departments.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $50,000 and damage to the contents was put at $30,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
