BPW offers $500 scholarship

MENDOTA – Mendota Business and Professional Women’s organization is once again offering a “Woman Returning to School” $500 scholarship this fall.

Applicants must be adult women who are seeking support as they return to college or vocational school and show financial need. Applications, which are due Oct. 31, can be obtained from any BPW member, the organization’s Facebook page, or by emailing Jeri Atherton at athertonj64@gmail.com. Completed applications may be given to Darla Cocanour at Midland States Bank or submitted via the email address above.

The Mendota BPW met on Sept. 18 at El Zarape Restaurant to hear about the new Mendota Youth Center, which is located downtown in the Quest and Setchell Studio building, and is open to kids 5th grade through high school. Youth Director Michael Gonzalez explained the mission of the Youth Center.

“Our Mission for the Mendota Youth Center is to provide a safe, educational, spiritual, supervised atmosphere after school for our teens in our community. This will include homework help, games, presentations by local specialists, and whatever else the kids need.  All volunteers undergo serious background checks to ensure safety,” he explained.

The Mendota Youth Center, according to Gonzalez and co-director Pastor Miguel Bermudez, needs volunteers to help the kids with homework and supervision. Supplies and donations are also needed.  Anyone can email to find out more information at MendotaYouthCenter@gmail.com.

In further business, members discussed upcoming meetings and events, including their first fundraiser, the UpScale Bake Sale. Members will be taking orders for the wonderful pumpkin cheesecakes and special pumpkin pies available for Thanksgiving time. Contact any BPW member, BPW Facebook page, or again email athertonj64@gmail.com. Cheesecakes are $20 and pies $10 delivered on Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

The next meeting will be held at Mendota Golf Course on Tuesday, Oct. 16 with social hour at 5 p.m. and program and dinner at 6 p.m. Art teacher and member Gretchen Fitzpatrick will lead “Pumpkin Painting and Decorating.” Anyone wishing to join may contact any member or just show up and learn more about BPW and helping area girls and women achieve their personal and educational goals.

Omicron

OTTAWA – The Omicron Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met at Pitstick Pavilion in Ottawa on Sept. 18. Lambda State (Illinois) President, Debra LeBlanc, installed the chapter’s new officers. Installed were Mary Sue Myers, Peru and Bev Madsen, Ottawa, co-presidents; Patty Hopkins, Ottawa, first vice president; Fran Ogden, Marseilles, second vice president; Marilee Applebee, Seneca, recording secretary; Alaina Weatherford, Ottawa, corresponding secretary; Janice Kaufman, Mendota, treasurer; and Mechthild Ferguson, Ottawa, assistant treasurer.

The program, Omicron in Wonderland, was presented by the Special Events committee. Silver fringe decorated the front doors to give the illusion of entering the looking glass. Tables were arranged for a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Members participated in activities with the Mad Hatter, Patty Hopkins; Queen of Hearts, Kay Carlson; the White Rabbit, Teresa Cameron; and assisting was the Cheshire Cat, Caroline Martin. Six members received “un-birthday present” gift bags. The program’s goal was to respect a great piece of literature, get members talking and socializing and transporting everyone to a wonderful, magical and downright zany world as a way to begin their own adventure into this year’s Omicron schedule.

The business meeting was conducted by Mary Sue Myers. As part of an on-going project, the Personal Growth and Services committee collected school supplies for River’s Edge Academy teachers. In October members will fill jars with loose change to help support area food pantries.

The Ways and Means Committee reported on the 2018 Blueberry Project. Members picked, packed and delivered 737 pounds of blueberries. This was their 13th season for the blueberry project. They have now picked 8,350 pounds of blueberries or 4.175 tons. The committee’s next project will be a fundraiser sponsored by Schwan’s.

All profits from chapter projects will fund the following chapter projects: Martha’s Books, Recruitment Grant, Grant-in Aid, and three classroom stipends for members.

The chapter’s next meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 16 at Pitstick Pavilion. The program will be a travel adventure.
