FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. - Carol Jean (Walter) Nyi, 80, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 27, 2019 at Warner Center Community Hospice in Fernandina Beach, Fla. with family by her side.
A memorial service was held on July 30 at King of Peace in Kingsland, Ga.
Survivors include one sister, Judy (Tom) Kerns of Mendota; three children, Kristin (David) Crosby, Kathryn (Lee) Greene, and Todd Becker; seven grandchildren, Scott (Braylee) Swick, Brad Swick, Karli (Brent Turner) Greene, Cody Crosby, Ryan Greene, Brynn Becker and Brooke Becker; three great-grandchildren, Shephard Swick, Rebecca Turner and Woodley Turner; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Rio.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Steven Nyi; her ex-husband, Howard Becker; and her parents, Edwin and Christine Walter.
Carol graduated from Mendota High School in 1957, received her RN degree from Galesburg Cottage School of Nursing in 1960 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Nursing from the College of St. Francis. She further specialized in enterostomal therapy and became a trained enterostomal therapist (RNET). Her passion was healthcare and upon retiring from full-time nursing, Carol continued working part-time in the nursing field with several organizations throughout the years including Hospice of Golden lsles (Brunswick, Ga). She was involved with several church organizations, parish nursing, volunteer cheerleading coach, Junior Women’s Club, and several medical missionary trips. She was a greyhound rescuer and an avid Jacksonville Jaguar fan (among other NFL teams). She enjoyed photography, painting, traveling and spending time with her family.
