The answer to last week’s quiz is: The first credit card, the Diners Club, was issued in 1950. Its creator thought the card was only a passing fad even though 20,000 people were using it by the end of the first year. In 1952, he sold his shares in the company to his partners for more than $200,000. The Diners Club continued to grow until finally 1958, two competitors, American Express and the Bank Americard (later called VISA), arrived on the scene. The concept of a universal credit card had taken root.
