BYRON – Two-time defending state champion Byron lost a bulk of the players that helped it get those titles, but the Lady Tigers still have plenty of firepower. Mendota found that out in absorbing a 43-22 loss in the Big Northern Conference opener on Dec. 1 at Byron.
Mendota trailed 19-10 at halftime and 30-19 after three, then Byron pulled away in the fourth frame when the Lady Trojans managed just three points.
“We came out extremely flat on offense and were able to hang around for two and a half quarters despite just not being able to get the offense rolling,” said coach John Hansen.
Phalen Hessenberger had 10 points and Abby Phalen collected five rebounds for Mendota, which is 3-3 overall and 0-1 in league play. Amellia Bromenschenkel also had five rebounds and a pair of steals.
