Byron, Marquette deal setbacks to Trojans

Byron shot the lights out from three-point land and rolled over Mendota, 78-56, in a non-conference varsity boys’ basketball encounter on Dec. 1 at Byron.

Six Tigers connected from beyond the arc on their way to 16 total three-pointers in the contest. Byron’s Jack Hively pumped in eight treys and finished with 34 points. He had three trifectas in the first quarter as the Tigers raced out to a 20-9 lead. Mendota made it a single-digit deficit (33-24) at the half, but Hively was back at it in the third period with four treys during a 25-point explosion by Byron.

Mendota placed three players in double-figure scoring, led by Rafael Romero with 14 points. Isaac Guzman chipped in with 13 markers, while Izaiah Nanez added 10 tallies.


The Trojans opened up play in the Colmone Classic and dropped a 58-36 decision to Ottawa Marquette on Dec. 3 at Spring Valley.

Marquette built a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and held a 28-20 margin at intermission. Mendota hung around into the third quarter when it trailed by a 39-32 count, but Marquette ran off 15 points in a row to pull away. The Trojans managed only four fourth-quarter points.

Romero and Nanez had 11 points apiece to pace the Trojans (2-3).

The tournament will continue until the finals on Saturday, Dec. 10.
