MENDOTA – After nearly a two-week layoff from game competition, the Mendota Lady Trojans showed no signs of rust as they romped over Rochelle, 64-45, in nonconference action on Jan. 4 at the MHS gym.
Amellia Bromenschenkel in particular was at the top of her game as she poured in 41 points, just four shy of Rochelle’s team total. Bromenschenkel’s outburst is believed to be a single-game scoring record at MHS. The junior sharpshooter had 26 points at the half and tallied 12 in the fourth frame to stifle any chances of a Rochelle comeback.
“Amellia had a monster game despite being double-teamed,” said Mendota coach John Hansen.
In addition to her scoring prowess, Bromenschenkel also led the Lady Trojans with 20 rebounds.
“I thought our defense didn’t give Rochelle many good looks in the second half, and we did a good job on the boards and coming up with loose balls,” added Hansen.
The two teams played to a 16-16 tie after the first quarter. Four three-pointers by the Lady Hubs kept them in the game.
After an 11-point first quarter, Bromenschenkel pumped in 15 second-quarter points and the Lady Trojans pulled out to a 35-27 halftime lead. Mendota led 44-32 after three periods and then outscored Rochelle, 20-13, in the fourth.
Jaelyn Fitzgerald chipped in with nine points for Mendota (13-6), while Jenna O’Donnell provided seven rebounds, five assists and five steals.
