Bishop Hill Civil War Day to be held May 26

BISHOP HILL – As part of Bishop Hill’s celebration of the Illinois Bicentennial, the Bishop Hill Heritage Association has organized a Civil War Day for Saturday May 26. There will be Union and Confederate encampments in the village park all day, with programs occurring throughout the day. All these programs are free and open to the public. Some of the programs include an artillery demonstration, a speech by General “Black Jack” Logan, medical demonstrations, Civil War songs concerts, book sale by “Civil War Fathers” author Tim Pletkovich, and of course, battles. For more program schedule and details, go to www.bishophillheritage.org , call (309) 927-3899, or email bhha@mymctc.net.

The event will feature:

Nationally recognized author Tim Pletkovich will be at Bishop Hill, where he will sell copies of his book, “Civil War Fathers: Sons of the Civil War in World War II.” Pletkovich will be at the all-day event on the front porch of the Steeple Building Museum. “Civil War Fathers” is composed of narratives of World War II veterans whose actual dads fought eighty years earlier in the American Civil War.

Who was John A. Logan? Was he: General Grant’s favorite Civil War officer, or one of Illinois’ most powerful Senators, or Founder of Memorial Day as a National Holiday, or Mark Twain’s favorite public speaker… Or all of the above? At 1 p.m., spend an hour with this enigmatic character as personified by Brian Fox Ellis and maybe you will better understand why Frederick Douglas said, if a man like Black Jack Logan can have a change of heart then there is hope for everyone.

As a starchy dry troubadour, Dan Haughey spices up the occasion with some down-home-humor, as well as bitter-sweet reflections related to the Civil War. In 45-55 minutes, you will get the best of the North and South. Some tunes that Dan will perform are, “The Battle Cry of Freedom”, “Just Before the Battle”, “Jimmy Crack Corn”, “Goober Peas”, “Dixie”, and more at the 3:30 p.m. concert.

Join singer/songwriter Barry Cloyd as he explores the history of the war through songs famous and less well known. With more than 2000 Civil War songs to choose from, many written by the soldiers themselves, let the Drummer Boy of Shiloh be your guide on a tour of the Civil War through its music at the 7 p.m. concert at the Bishop Hill Commons.
