ROCK FALLS – One bad quarter against a quality team like Rock Falls can spell disaster. Unfortunately, that’s what happened to Mendota.
The Trojans put together three strong quarters, but the third frame was a dud as they dropped a 71-53 decision to the Rockets in a Big Northern Conference match-up on Dec. 19 at Rock Falls.
Mendota came off the bus ready to play as it seized a 19-15 lead after the opening stanza. Rock Falls managed to make up the difference plus one in the second and held a 30-29 halftime lead. Then came the third period. The Trojans scored just seven points compared to 21 for Rock Falls, and that was all she wrote.
Ben Bokus was the lone double-digit scorer for the Trojans with 17 points. Kaine Pizano-Olson checked in with nine tallies, while Preston O’Sadnick added seven. Pizano-Olson and O’Sadnick tied for the rebounding lead with eight apiece. Blake Stamberger snagged seven caroms.
Mendota (4-8, 1-2) shot at a 44 percent clip from the floor and 65 percent from the free throw line, while Rock Falls hit 42 percent of its field goal attempts and 68 percent of its charity tosses. The Trojans held a slim 30-28 margin on the glass and committed 21 turnovers, 10 more than the Rockets.
