MENDOTA - Enjoy an entertaining evening of music and history when Graves-Hume Public Library presents “An Irish Immigrant’s Song: the Celtic Influx” with Barry Cloyd. This special program will take place on Tuesday, March 3 beginning at 6 p.m. The performance is free and open to the public; no library card is required. Please call the library at (815) 538-5142 to register.

In the mid 1800s at the time of the “Great Hunger,” sometimes known as the Irish Potato Famine, the Midwest was the western frontier of America. The influx of Celtic/Irish people in those times literally changed the face of America as they arrived seeking freedom and work on the great construction projects of the era. Their presence and stories still have an impact on our lives today.

Through ancient myth and song, as well as some original pieces, Barry Cloyd presents the history and heart of the Celtic people who came to the Midwest in search of liberty and opportunity. A Midwestern based, full-time touring singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and educator, Cloyd has spent a lifetime creating a performance style that weaves the genres of Celtic, Blues, Folk and Roots music into a unique blend all his own. He is a strong vocalist as well as a storyteller, theatrical performer and historian, who delivers his music on a multitude of guitars and other stringed instruments.
