MENDOTA – A well-balanced Amboy Lady Clippers team was too much for Mendota to handle as the Lady Trojans fell, 51-37, on Nov. 20 at the MHS gym.
Amboy raced out to an 11-1 lead before Mendota scored the final six points of the first quarter to close the gap. But Amboy kicked things into high gear in the second period as it outscored Mendota, 23-8, to take a commanding 34-15 halftime lead. Amboy sophomore Mallory Powers keyed the second-quarter uprising as she poured in three three-pointers and a pair of free throws.
A stingy Amboy defense bottled up Mendota’s offense as Amellia Bromenschenkel was the lone double-digit scorer with 15 points. Larkin O’Donnell added eight markers. Phalen Hessenberger topped the rebounding chart with seven, while Bromenschenkel had six caroms. O’Donnell picked off four steals.
The Lady Trojans (3-2) connected on just 11 of its 47 field goal attempts.
Powers finished with 15 points to pace Amboy. Abi Payne added 11 points and Breanna Fisher chipped in with 10 tallies.
