ACS forming a new ‘LaSalle County Days of Hope’ to replace Relay events

LA SALLE CO. – Two area American Cancer Society Relay events, Relay For Life of Upper Illinois Valley and Relay For Life of LaSalle County, have joined forces to create the new “LaSalle County Days of Hope.” The LaSalle County Days of Hope will replace the individual Relays held in Mendota and Streator and instead consist of multiple experiences throughout LaSalle County to support the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives, celebrating lives, and leading the fight for a world without cancer.

“We will still have a presence in Mendota and Streator with a survivor reception and luminaria ceremony in both communities as stand-alone events,” said Mike Schulte, ACS Community Development Manager. “This new format is a way to specifically recognize our local survivors while still providing unique ways to raise resources in the fight against cancer.”

Initial plans for the Days of Hope include a Night of Hope celebration in a central part of the county. This will be a celebration to honor and remember those affected with cancer with live entertainment, team activities, food vendors, and a kids’ play area. Like Relay For Life, participants can join a team and fundraise for the cause.

Another Days of Hope event will be “Farm To Table,” a ticketed fundraiser that showcases locally produced products, with proceeds going to help fund the American Cancer Society’s mission delivery.

“We’re excited about the opportunity for county-wide collaboration,” said David Shindley, Senior Manager of Community Development for the American Cancer Society. “LaSalle County has been a leading community in the fight against cancer. We want to create moments that are meaningful for the community while simultaneously raising funds and awareness in the fight against cancer.”

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is the only organization fighting cancer on every front. Funds raised from community events allow the ACS to attack cancer in dozens of ways, each of them critical to achieving a world without cancer – from developing breakthrough therapies and innovative research, to building supportive communities that come together to help those affected by cancer with access to treatment. The ACS provides empowering resources to deploying activists to raise awareness and develop game-changing approaches to address the cancer burden for all people.

Together, we can beat our biggest rival. For questions on volunteering or joining a team, please reach out to Mike Schulte at (309) 688-6582 or e-mail mike.schulte@cancer.org. Event information and registration can be found at http://main.acsevents.org/lasallenightofhope.
