MENDOTA – When it comes to breast examinations, it is better to be safe than sorry. With the improvements in medical technology, it is now easier than before to identify any concerns.

Tiffany Magallanes, diagnostic imaging manager at OSF HealthCare Saint Paul Medical Center in Mendota, said the improvements in technology allow radiologists to have a much clearer picture than ever before. “Breast tomosynthesis, also called 3D mammography, is a new type of mammogram that produces a three-dimensional image of the breast,” said Magallanes. “The imaging machine moves around the breast in an arc. This results in multiple x-rays that the computer reformats into a 3D image. By comparison, conventional 2D mammography produces a single, flattened image of the breast, making cancer detection more challenging for physicians. 3D imaging detects 41 percent more invasive breast cancers and reduces false positives by up to 40 percent.”

“With 3D we are able to offer better detection, fewer call backs and greater peace of mind. For a smaller facility to have such advanced technology is a blessing. We are making a tremendous impact on the health of women in our community,” added Magallanes.

Jennifer Junis, president at OSF Saint Paul, said they are the only hospital in the Illinois Valley to offer 3D mammograms. “We are very fortunate to be a part of OSF HealthCare and to be able to have this state-of-the-art technology that many hospitals don’t yet have,” she noted.

The standard of care for mammography set by the American Cancer Society remains having an initial screening at age 40 and annually thereafter. Women are advised to talk to their OB/GYN or primary care provider for guidance on breast health and the best options for their unique care.
